Key outcomes of 2025 international EDQM Blood Conference published

The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) has collaborated with scientific committee members on an article published in Blood Transfusion, entitled “Innovation in Blood Establishment Processes, Strasbourg, 2025: a Conference Report”, that highlights the key outcomes of the international Blood Conference on Innovation in Blood Establishment Processes, organised and hosted by the EDQM in Strasbourg (France) on 14 and 15 January 2025. This publication reflects the EDQM’s leadership in advancing innovation and safety in blood donation and transfusion and showcases our strategic commitment to global outreach, stakeholder engagement and progress in the sector.

The conference brought together nearly 250 experts and stakeholders from across Europe and beyond to explore emerging trends and developments in donor recruitment, blood component preparation and donor and recipient protection. It also served as a key milestone in preparing for the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/1938 on standards of quality and safety for substances of human origin intended for human applications (SoHO Regulation), which will come into force in 2027.

The event also reinforced the EDQM’s role as a recognised expert body under the new SoHO Regulation, with its Guide to the preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components (Blood Guide), overseen by the European Committee on Blood Transfusion (CD-P-TS), serving as a formal reference for quality and safety standards.

The article and the conference it documents are strong examples of how the EDQM continues to foster innovation, share expertise and support stakeholders in adapting to evolving regulatory and scientific landscapes.
