A technical guide for manufacturers and regulators

Cork is widely used in the food and beverage industry to seal containers (often bottles) and is also commonly used in trays, placemats, fruit bowls and many other everyday household items. This new technical guide on cork materials and articles for contact with foodstuffs was drafted with regulators, inspectors and business operators in mind, both to support them in ensuring the quality and safety of cork materials used in such applications and to promote the harmonisation of technical standards, an important step towards ensuring consumer safety.

Drafted by the European Committee for Food Contact Materials and Articles (CD-P-MCA), this guide supersedes the Council of Europe’s 2007 Policy statement concerning cork stoppers and other cork materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. It also supplements Council of Europe Resolution CM/Res(2020)9 on the safety and quality of materials and articles for contact with food. It includes the full text of this resolution and presents scientific information and recommendations for compliance testing, and features a list of evaluated substances used in the manufacture of cork materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.
