EDQM releases new report highlighting key trends in blood collection, supply and use in Europe

The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Healthcare (EDQM) has published the latest activity report of the European Committee on Blood Transfusion (CD-P-TS) on the collection, supply and use of blood and blood components across Council of Europe member states for the years 2020 to 2023.

The report highlights significant trends that reflect key developments in Europe’s blood sector over the four-year period.

Key positive trends include:

  • an increase in the total number of donors (+1.1% per year) and first-time donors (+3.4% per year);
  • growth in whole blood collections (+2.1% per year), platelet apheresis units collected (+2.1% per year) and plasma collected and supplied for fractionation (+1.3% per year);
  • increases in the availability and transfusion of red cell and platelet units.

Negative trends were observed for:

  • granulocyte apheresis units collected (−11.4% per year);
  • plasma (FFP) units transfused (−2.3% per year).

This report provides a unique and reliable source of international activity data, offering insights into the collection, supply and use of blood and blood components in Europe. It strengthens the monitoring of supply levels and trends and contributes to transparency and oversight of activities across national systems.

The report serves to inform policy and practice development and is a valuable resource for professionals, regulators and policy makers working to ensure the continuity and sustainability of the supply of blood and blood components in Europe.
