The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) of the Council of Europe has published its 2024 annual report. Once again, the report attests to our strong commitment to making better healthcare accessible for all and provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced and achievements made in the past year.
The year 2024 was one of milestone anniversaries, but far from focusing on the past, we strove to innovate and prepare for a demanding and uncertain future. The 60th anniversary of the EDQM, celebrated at our international conference “Today, tomorrow, together for public health – Celebrating 60 years of excellence in public health protection”, highlighted the sense of collaboration behind our initiatives by bringing together over 450 participants to reinforce the bonds that unite the broad and diverse community working to make better public health a reality. Likewise, our Open Day helped strengthen our relationship with the local community.
It should come as no surprise that the scope of key EDQM initiatives continued to increase, making their impact felt on a greater scale: the removal of all general animal safety tests and the rabbit pyrogen test from the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) marked a huge step forward for animal welfare, the European Network of Official Medicines Control Laboratories (the OMCL Network) welcomed new members, the procedure for the Certification of suitability to the Ph. Eur. monographs (CEP) – accepted by more and more authorities worldwide – continued to evolve to meet the complex needs or our users with the full implementation of the CEP 2.0 and the newly adopted EU regulation on substances of human origin (SoHO) recognised the EDQM as a key expert body.
