The State General Laboratory (SGL) of Cyprus focuses on scientific excellence as a way of contributing to improving the quality of life of its citizens. The SGL is active in many areas, including cosmetics, and relies on both traditional and more sophisticated equipment, such as head-space GC-MS, GC-MS MS, ICP MS, LC-MS MS, QTOF, NMR and FTIR. This equipment allows the SGL to test cosmetics for a wide variety of parameters in order to prove compliance with legislative requirements for quality and safety, including the detection of contaminants, preservatives (benzoic acid, sorbic acid, 2-phenoxyethanol, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate), free formaldehyde, hydroquinone (monomethyl, monoethyl and monobenzyl ethers) and lidocaine, to name a few.
The SGL has performed a wide range of key analytical studies, the results of which have been made available to other OCCLs in the Network.
Topics covered include:
- the quality of tattoo inks;
- the development of microbiological and physicochemical testing methods;
- the detection of allergens, phthalates and N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) in products for babies and children (including from packaging migration);
- heavy metals in cosmetic products; and the detection of a wide range of preservatives including parabens, triclosan, Kathon (MCI/MI) and bronopol.
