Registration is now open for our upcoming joint EDQM-EPAA symposium titled “Pyrogen testing 2.0: Ethical, Evolving and Eco-friendly”.
In February 2023, the EDQM and the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) hosted a landmark conference to present the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) Commission’s strategy to phase out the rabbit pyrogen test (RPT) and transition to modern, animal-free alternatives. Driven by ethical concerns and scientific progress, this transition culminated in the deletion of all references to the RPT from Ph. Eur. texts as of July 2025, as well as the suppression of general chapter 2.6.8. Pyrogens, which will take effect on 1 January 2026.
This follow-up symposium will:
- provide updates on the implementation of the strategy to phase out the RPT across Europe;
 - explore the challenges and solutions encountered during the transition to the monocyte activation test (MAT);
 - explore the status of recombinant reagents for use in the bacterial endotoxins test (BET);
 - share insights into how other pharmacopoeias and regulatory frameworks outside Europe have adapted in response to the Ph. Eur.’s initiative;
 - bring forward perspectives from regulators, industry and international stakeholders on the future of animal-free pyrogenicity testing.

When: 25-26 February 2026
Venue: European Commission’s Albert Borschette Conference Centre (CCAB) in Brussels (Belgium) & online
Who should attend: this symposium will be of particular interest to professionals from the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries, contract laboratories and health authorities.
Participation is free of charge.
