Welcome to the Melclass Database

The Melclass Database is hosted by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare (EDQM) and is supervised by the Committee of Experts on the Classification of Medicines as Regards their Supply (CD-P-PH/PHO).

The Melclass Database contains the recommendations that the Committee of Experts CD-P-PH/PHO issues twice a year to health authorities of the Council of Europe Member States parties to the Convention on the Elaboration of a European Pharmacopoeia for the classification of medicines and their supply conditions.

The Melclass Database also contains national information about the classification status and supply conditions of medicines in Council of Europe Member States parties to the Convention on the Elaboration of a European Pharmacopoeia.

Please note that:

  1. The Committee of Experts CD-P-PH/PHO does not issue recommendations on the classification of particular medicines, but on active substances used in a medicine for a specific therapeutic purpose.

  2. The classification status of medicines authorised in Europe remains a core competency of the Member States and the recommendations of the Committee of Experts CD-P-PH/PHO are not legally binding.

  3. In its work, the Committee of Experts CD-P-PH/PHO uses the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification maintained by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Statistics Methodology to identify active substances or combinations of active substances.

  4. Wherever possible, additional national information on the medication supply conditions is provided. The absence of additional information does not mean that there are no additional details in relation to the supply conditions of the selected active substance.

  5. National information about the classification and supply conditions of medicines in the Council of Europe Member States is provided by the CD-P-PH/PHO delegates and is updated on a regular basis. The EDQM and the Committee of Experts CD-P-PH/PHO cannot be held liable for the content of the Melclass Database or its use by third parties.
