Since the opening for signature of the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals Used for Experimental and Other Scientific Purposes in 1986, the European Pharmacopoeia Commission and its experts have made significant progress in Replacing, Reducing, Refining (3Rs) the use of animals for test purposes related to the development and control of medicinal products.

Although updates on achievements in the field of the 3Rs are regularly provided on the EDQM website, an article summarising the activities of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission in this field within the last decade has just been published. In addition to the progress in the Ph. Eur. texts, the article also describes tools utilised in the implementation of the 3R principles as well as the challenges encountered and future perspectives.

The article can be freely accessed in Pharmeuropa Bio & Scientific Notes and is also available here.
