In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the EDQM/Council of Europe and the European Commission (EC) have decided to modify the conference “Keeping up with Reality and Quality: A Challenge for European Blood Establishments” to a fully online format that will take place from Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 October 2020.

The conference, which will cover the challenges faced by blood establishments (BEs) in Europe, also marks 10 years of successful collaboration between the EC and the EDQM/Council of Europe in the field of blood. The two organisations work together for a safe and sustainable blood supply and with this conference, they aim to provide BEs and other stakeholders with a forum to discuss issues of interest and to tackle future challenges together. The conference will also be an opportunity to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the blood sector.

In recent decades, the scientific, regulatory, societal and economic factors affecting the activities of European BEs have evolved rapidly, requiring them to continually adapt their working methods while pursuing the public health objective of ensuring continuous and safe blood supplies. The conference will help to identify how the EC and the EDQM/Council of Europe can devise ways to make the blood systems more efficient, resilient and sustainable. It will do so by focusing on the globalisation of the market supply of materials and equipment, the new medical devices regulations, the changing scope of practice among healthcare professionals and recent regulatory developments in Europe.

The conference programme has now been reorganised into three-hour segments, scheduled across three days, to ensure the content is tailored to the new online format. More than 15 hours of engaging presentations will be offered. The online conferencing system will allow for live interactions with the speakers, and participants will be able to submit questions during each session.

Registration is FREE OF CHARGE and participants can connect from the comfort of their own homes or offices. More information on the new programme and how to register for the conference “Keeping up with Reality and Quality: A Challenge for European Blood Establishments”.
