Council of Europe Resolution on the implementation of pharmaceutical care - Implementation of pharmaceutical care in community and hospital pharmacy settings

Inappropriate and irrational use of medicines is a widespread problem which leads to sub-optimal medication outcomes and significant health harm for patients, and decreases the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare systems.

Pharmaceutical care addresses the medication needs of patients directly and comprehensively and it contributes to promoting patient-centred care, optimising medication use and improving a patient’s quality of life.

In March 2020, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a new Resolution CM/Res(2020)3 on the implementation of pharmaceutical care for the benefit of patients and health services. This resolution defines a framework for promoting and implementing the concept of pharmaceutical care in national healthcare systems and daily practice.

The aim of this webinar was to explain the content and added value of the above resolution, share examples of how pharmaceutical care activities can be implemented in daily practice in community and hospital pharmacy settings, provide insights about interprofessional co-operation in pharmaceutical care, and give an overview of the implementation of pharmaceutical care in some Council of Europe member states.

Target audience

This webinar is intended for representatives of national competent authorities, healthcare professionals (i.e. pharmacists working in hospital and community pharmacies, nurses and physicians) and academics working in the domain of pharmacy practice. As pharmaceutical care is a patient-centred approach, the webinar is also open to patients’ associations and in general to all who are interested in learning more about the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare (EDQM) and its role in setting quality and safety standards in pharmaceutical practices and pharmaceutical care.
