The Declaration of Istanbul

A Summit Meeting, convened by The Transplantation Society and the International Society of Nephrology, was held in Istanbul, Turkey from 30 April to 2 May 2008 on the growing problems of organ sales, transplant tourism and trafficking in organs in the context of global shortage of organs.  More that 150 healthcare professionals from 78 countries, including representatives from the UK, USA, France, India and China, attended and agreed a "Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism”. It proposes a number of strategies to try to increase organ donation and to prevent organ trafficking, transplant commercialism and ‘transplant tourism’.
