The European Committee on Pharmaceuticals and Pharmaceutical Care (CD-P-PH) and the European Pharmacopoeia Commission have approved a project for the elaboration of a pan-European formulary for non-licensed medicines for children. At their last meetings, the two bodies decided to support the project which goes back to discussions held at the level of the National Pharmacopoeia Authorities (NPAs).
The project is aimed at compiling a harmonised European formulary of suitable formulations for paediatric use. First, criteria will be defined for the evaluation and rational choice of existing, suitable paediatric preparations from national formularies and the adaptation of existing formulations, taking into account relevant standards established by the European competent authorities (including the Ph. Eur.) and the WHO.
The project will be carried out by two groups of specialists under the auspices of the CD-P-PH and the European Pharmacopoeia Commission.
